The European Commission is “looking closely” at potential anti-competitive conduct involving banks and third-party providers, a senior official has said, despite regulatory reforms in the area. Speaking in a personal capacity at last month’s KNect365 Competition Law conference in London, a commission unit head said injecting competition into the payments market will not be left to the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) alone. “You can understand that is an area we will be watching,” said Jean Bergevin, who leads the financial institutions team within the European Commission’s competition division.
